Minnesota coach Don Lucia will earn one of the five highest salaries among college hockey coaches under a contract extension that carries through 2009, the Star Tribune of Minneapolis reported.
Lucia, who coached the Gophers to the national title in 2002, will make a base salary of $150,000 this season and earn more each subsequent season. He is scheduled to make $200,000 a year by the end of the contract, plus incentives and income from camps and other arrangements, the newspaper reported in Wednesday’s editions.
This season was the fourth of a six-year deal he signed when he became the Gophers’ coach in 1999. The Star Tribune reported Lucia and former Minnesota athletics director Tom Moe started talks on an extension this summer, and they carried over when Joel Maturi took over as AD.
