Oswego has promoted longtime assistant Ed Gosek to head coach.
Gosek, who has served as an assistant coach for the Lakers the past 13 years, becomes the fifth head coach in the program’s history.
The former Laker player replaces George Roll, who was named head coach at Clarkson after leading the Lakers to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four in March. SUNYAC champion Oswego was first runner-up in the tournament, losing the championionship game to Norwich, 2-1.
“I look forward to continuing the development of the Oswego State hockey program,” said Gosek. “This past season’s success brings excitement and enthusiasm which we hope to continue in the years to come.”
“Ed Gosek is the ideal person to carry forward Oswego’s winning hockey tradition, which was so brilliantly displayed this year under the leadership of George Roll,” said Joe Grant, vice president for student affairs. “Working together over the past seven years, these two built a hockey program made up of players who are both outstanding student-athletes and model citizens.”
As a recruiter, Gosek has been key to the success of the Oswego program.
Last summer, he coached the New York 17-Select Team at the USA Hockey Select Festival in St. Cloud, Minn. Gosek has also accepted the position to coach that same team this summer when the event returns to St. Cloud.
In addition to his duties at Oswego, Gosek also serves on the New York State player development council, is New York State Regional Coaching Director for USA Hockey, and serves on the New York State Central Section Empire State Ice Hockey selection committee.
Gosek’s is also involved in the Oswego Minor Hockey Association, and has guided five teams to New York State championships.
