Boston College women’s coach Tom Babson has retired, ending his four year run at the helm of the Eagles.
Babson directed BC to a 12-17-3 record in 2002-03, the most Division I wins in the history of the program. The Eagles were an inaugural member of Hockey East this past season.
“We are very grateful to Tom Babson for his commitment to our women’s hockey program for the past four years,” said athletic director Gene DeFilippo.
“His hard work and dedication helped build a solid foundation, one from which our program will continue to grow.”
“It has been a wonderful four years,” Babson said. “I have had the opportunity to work with some terrific individuals at Boston College. To see the progress our program has made over the past four years has been most satisfying. We broke all win records for the school, and we raised our overall team academic average from a 2.75 to a 3.25.
“With the University’s continued commitment to the program, I look forward to watching it progress in the future.”
Before taking over as head coach at BC in 1999, Babson was the training coach for the U.S. women’s national and Olympic teams from 1996-98. He was also the camp director for the U.S. National Women’s Hockey Festival from 1997 to 1999 and coached several junior Olympic Development Program teams in Lake Placid.
Babson has also been a writer, teacher, actor and director of theatre, film and television for more than 25 years. He spent 20 years in Los Angeles, where he made appearances in more than 250 films and television shows, including “Hill Street Blues”, “St. Elsewhere”, “MacGyver” and “Full House”. He also had an 11-year stint as the lawyer for the character of Sam Malone on the television show “Cheers”.
The school will begin a search for a new coach immediately.
