A service for Herb Brooks, the legendary coach at Minnesota, the U.S. Olympic team and the NHL, who died Monday in an auto accident, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. CT at the Cathedral of St. Paul, Minn.
In advance of that service, a wake will be held Friday from 3-8 p.m. CT, and Saturday 8:30-10 a.m., also at the Cathedral.
Brooks, who was 66, was killed while riding his car home from the Minneapolis airport. He was thrown from his vehicle after it careened off the road.
According to new details, officials say Brooks was not wearing his seat belt and that doing so probably would have saved his life. Preliminary reports indicate that did not suffer any physical trauma in advance of the accident — such as a heart attack — that could have caused the incident. A cell phone was found at the scene, but officials say it was not being used at the time of the accident.
Legendary Minnesota hockey player, and Brooks’ long-time friend, John Mayasich, speculated to the Associated Press that Brooks may have been fatigued and, possibly, fell asleep at the wheel.
According to his friends, Brooks had just completed a non-stop weekend, which included 29 holes of golf over two days, a banquet for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, and late-night socializing and reminiscing.

The Brooks family is requesting that no cameras or recording devices of any kind be brought to the funeral service.
Brooks is survived by his wife, Patti, and two children: son, Dan, and daughter, Kelly.
