Smart Departs Lowell

Dominic Smart, the team’s top goaltender as a freshman, has left Massachusetts-Lowell and will not return for his sophomore season. No reason was given for his departure, and there is no word on his hockey-playing future.

The 6-foot, 188-pound Smart, from Millersville, Md., was 6-12-5 for the RiverHawks last season in 26 games. He had a 3.77 goals against average and 84.2 save percentage.

Smart’s departure leaves Lowell with two returning goaltenders — junior Chris Davidson (5-8-0, 3.86) and sophomore Paul Mammola, who saw brief action in just one game last year.

Lowell also has John Yaros, a transfer from Army, coming in. He will be eligible starting in the second half of the season. Yaros was 2-8-5 with a 3.04 goals against average for Army as a freshman in 2001-02.
