Colgate head coach Don Vaughan will serve as the school’s interim athletic director for the 2003-04 school year, while associate head coach Stan Moore will take the reins of the men’s hockey program as interim head coach.
The announcement was made by Jack Dovidio, the school’s Dean of Faculty and Provost. In a related decision, Colgate’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Janet Little, will also take on the role of coordinating strategic planning for the department after having served as the replacement for departed AD Mark Murphy during the summer.
“We are grateful to Don for stepping in to serve the university in this way, and we deeply appreciate the outstanding job Janet has done over the past several months,” Dovidio said.
“We also appreciate the hard work and diligence of the search committee. As the search progressed, it became clear that Colgate would be best served by appointing Don as interim director for a year, and we are delighted that he has accepted.”
Vaughan has coached the Raiders since 1992, amassing a record of 179-172-33. He was honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year in 1999-2000, a year in which Colgate advanced to the NCAA tournament.
Before Colgate, Vaughan was also an assistant coach for seven years at alma mater St. Lawrence and Cornell. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees at SLU.
“I believe in Colgate and in the direction we are headed,” said Vaughan.
“I am grateful for the trust of President Chopp, Dean Dovidio, and my colleagues in the division, and I am excited about this opportunity.”
As interim director of Colgate’s Division of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics, Vaughan will oversee 25 Division I men’s and women’s programs, most of which compete as members of the Patriot League. The division also provides instruction in physical education, as well as an extensive program of intramural, club and recreational sports and an active program of outdoor education.
Moore steps into a familiar role as head coach, having directed Union for two seasons from 1996-98. He was the ECAC Coach of the Year at Union in 1996-97 after the Dutchmen went 18-13-3, tying for fifth in league play.
Moore is in his second stay at Colgate, as he served as assistant coach under Vaughan from 1992-96 and then returned to the school in 1998 as associate head coach. He has also been an assistant coach at four other schools — Providence, Brown, Brockport and Potsdam.
According to Colgate, Moore will be credited with the team’s record this season while serving as interim head coach.
Last season, the Raiders went 17-19-4, 9-10-3 in the ECAC, tying for seventh. Colgate defeated SLU in the first round of the ECAC playoffs and then fell to Dartmouth in the quarterfinals. Both series went the full three games.
