Tim Gerrish is the leading candidate to fill the women’s head coaching vacancy at Union, according to sources. Gerrish spent the past season as an assistant coach with the Middlebury men, helping guide the Panthers to the NCAA Division III title.
Gerrish was the head coach of North Country Community College’s men’s team for 24 years and has also been an assistant coach with the US Women’s National Team, most recently behind the bench for the Four Nation’s Cup with head coach Ben Smith and assistant Mike Gilligan, the former Vermont head coach.
Gerrish’s ties with USA Hockey put him close to Union Athletic Director Val Belmonte, who was with USA Hockey before coming to Union.
Gerrish has interviewed with Belmonte, along with Findlay head coach Adam Brinker, who interviewed this past week on the Schenectady campus.
A report in Friday’s Schenectady (N.Y.) Gazette has Julie Sasner, the current women’s head coach at MIT and former women’s head coach at Cornell and Wisconsin, also being interviewed. According to sources, Sasner was contacted, but has not come to Schenectady to meet with Belmonte.
The Gazette also lists Tom Peart, the head women’s coach at St. Benedict’s as a fourth candidate for the position.
