From U.S. Camp to U.S. Team in One Month
Princeton sophomore Liz Keady was named to her first U.S. national team on Thursday – a feat all the more remarkable given that she was not even on the U.S. Under-22 roster six weeks ago. But Keady broke through with an outstanding effort at August’s U.S. National Festival in Lake Placid, and when UMD’s Larissa Luther was unable to compete due to her pregnancy, Keady became a late addition to the Under-22 series. There she shined in a first line role with Minnesota stars Natalie Darwitz and Kelly Stephens, and now all three are among the first 15 players named for the U.S. senior national team for the Four Nations Cup. The roster includes eight current college players, and one first-timer other than Keady – Dartmouth junior Tiffany Hagge. U.S. college players also made up 13 of the 40 players named to the Canadian Thanksgiving Festival, which will serve as the selection camp for the next Canadian national team. Poll Position
Providence has won Hockey East’s first two postseason crowns, but defending regular season champ New Hampshire was picked by Hockey East’s coaches to win the league this season. Boston College, the last place team each of the past two seasons, was a surprising third-place pick. Two-time defending CHA champion Mercyhurst has fallen short of NCAA bids each of the past two years, but this could be their year now that the tourney has expanded from four to eight teams. The Lakers were the CHA coaches’ pick to win the league, and they also placed four on the CHA Preseason All-League team. The ECAC became the first women’s league to release its preseason poll on Sept. 21st, and for the second straight year, Dartmouth was picked as the favorite, and placed two players on the ECAC Preseason All-League team. The WCHA will be the last conference to release its preseason picks.
