Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger announced his retirement today, effective June 30, 2005. Geiger, 65, has been OSU’s AD since May of 1994.
“This is a bittersweet occasion,” said Geiger. “It is my decision, and let me repeat that — it is my decision.
“I’m just tired, bone weary. Not the kind of tired that a good night’s sleep fixes.
Recently, the Ohio State athletic department has been under intense national media scrutiny for an ongoing investigation into alleged violations involving football players and football boosters.
Regarding the situation, Geiger said, “Controversy is always difficult. Clearly, we are dealing with some difficult issues, and I will work with my colleagues to see them through to conclusion, to the very, very best of my ability.”
“I feel very grateful that I can count him as a colleague and a friend,” said university president Karen Holbrook.
