Michigan Tech’s Murphy Signs With Maple Leafs

It was quite a day for Colin Murphy.

Not only did the Michigan Tech senior learn Thursday he was one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award and a member of the all-WCHA first team, he signed a professional deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Murphy said it’s a two-year contract but declined to reveal the terms. He’s scheduled to be in the lineup for the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate in Saint Johns, Newfoundland, this weekend.

“It’s nice to know that I’ll be able to make money and support my family,” said Murphy, who attended Thursday’s WCHA awards ceremony with his wife and young son.

Murphy led the WCHA with 42 assists this season and was third in the league with 53 points.

Michigan Tech was ousted from the league playoffs by Denver last weekend.

“There’s been a lot happening in the last weeks,” Murphy said. “But I’d still like to be playing.”
