Mike Bertoni has been dismissed as head hockey coach at UMass-Boston, the school announced Friday. John Giuliotti has been named the new coach on an interim basis.
Giuliotti was an assistant coach at Wentworth from 1996-2002 and most recently been an assistant at Lynnfield (Mass.) High School. The former North Adams State player has held several coaching and instructor positions at various youth hockey, high school and training programs throughout the New England Area.
Bertoni assumed the helm at UMass-Boston midway through the 2003-04 season on an interim basis, and was officially named head coach on June 1, 2004. He replaced Jack Foley at the helm of the Beacons, after Foley stepped down due to medical reasons.
Bertoni, a former Beacons player, scored 30 points in 83 games and captained the team during his senior season in 2001-02. He moved behind the bench as an assistant coach the next season.
As head coach, he compiled a 5-42-1 overall record, including 0-7-1 this season. The reason for his dismissal was not immediately provided by UMass-Boston.
