Union hockey’s leading scorer won’t be playing again this season. Sophomore forward Josh Coyle has been ruled academically ineligible by the school. Coyle, who leads the team with 18 points, on nine goals and nine assists, didn’t make the trip with the Dutchmen to the Dodge Hockey Classic in Minneapolis.
“We feel we have guys here that can step up and, hopefully, pick up the offense that we’re going to miss with not having Josh,” Union coach Nate Leaman said Tuesday. Leaman wouldn’t discuss Coyle’s grades.
“It’s going to be a great learning experience for Josh,” Leaman said. “I know Josh is going to return to the program and not only have a successful career here, but be a much better student and earn his Union degree.”
Coyle, a native of Brooklyn, Ohio, declined an interview request. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound right wing had 11 points on five goals and six assists last season. He had a point in each of the Dutchmen’s first nine games this year, the only player to accomplish that feat. He had a goal and three assists in Union’s 8-1 win over Bentley Oct. 28, and had two goals and one assist in a 6-2 win over Princeton Nov. 11.
