Rensselaer’s Jerry D’Amigo scored twice, and four other collegians added goals as the United States earned a spot in the World Junior Championship semifinals with a 6-2 victory over Finland on Saturday.
Notre Dame’s Kyle Palmieri, Denver’s Matt Donovan, Boston College’s Chris Kreider and North Dakota’s Danny Kristo also scored for the U.S., which will play Sweden at 9 p.m. Eastern Sunday in the semifinals.
Minnesota’s Jordan Schroeder had three assists, giving him the all-team lead for points in the World Juniors by an American. With 26, he passed the 25 of Jeremy Roenick.
D’Amigo’s first goal early in the second period built on first-period goals from Palmieri and Donovan to give the Americans a 3-0 lead.
Kreider restored the three-goal lead early in the third after Eero Elo scored for Finland in the second. And D’Amigo scored into the empty net in the final minute to respond to a goal by Finland’s Iiro Pakarinen.
Kristo also scored in the final minute for the U.S., which got 42 saves from St. Cloud State’s Mike Lee.
Finland outshot the U.S. 44-25, including 23-8 in the final period.
Switzerland upset Russia in the other quarterfinal, meaning the Swiss will play host Canada in Sunday’s other semifinal.
