A big tournament for Rensselaer’s Jerry D’Amigo keeps getting bigger.
D’Amigo scored twice, John Carlson broke a 2-2 tie in the third period and St. Cloud State’s Mike Lee made 27 saves in the United States’ 5-2 semifinal victory over Sweden on Sunday at the World Junior Championship.
D’Amigo has five goals in the tournament, and his second Sunday gave the Americans some breathing room. He scored with the U.S. shorthanded for a 4-2 lead with less than five minutes remaining.
Carlson scored with 7:26 remaining to put the Americans ahead for good and book a rematch against Canada in Tuesday’s gold-medal game. The Canadians beat the U.S. in a shootout in the final game of pool play.
Carlson was plus-5 on the night.
Tyler Johnson scored in the first period for the U.S., but Sweden took the lead on on a pair of second-period goals by Anton Lander.
D’Amigo scored his first goal of the night to tie the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second period.
Lee stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period.
