But if this weekend were my first exposure to college hockey, I don’t know if I would come back.
Two blowouts in a building, that, despite the record-shattering announced attendance of 34,954 was half full for most of the day. After BC made it 5-1 in the nightcap, there was a stampede to leave the building.
Ford Field had all the ambiance of a warehouse. Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves said, “Being on the bench, the crowd noise, it seemed so distant. … It seemed pretty quiet in there.”
It was pretty quiet everywhere.
I salute the RIT fans, who were the loudest, despite not having much to cheer about. But even their enthusiasm didn’t resonate because of the sheer distance between the fans and the playing surface, and at least 15,000 fans disguised as seats.
Still, there’s always Saturday for this Frozen Four to redeem itself. There’s sure to be more folks in the stands, and we can hope for a closer game.
