In our first full weekend of play, it was exciting as always, in both the conference and the non-conference series. Here are a couple quick thoughts on what happened.
BC sweeps Denver
– Denver looked sloppy … but they did play the number one team in the country and BC definitely looked the part.
– George Gwozdecky knows his team has a lot of work ahead of it which is something I can definitely agree with.
“BC is the gold standard in college hockey right now and they are frustrating to play against,” he said after Saturday’s game. “We were better tonight, but we have a lot of areas to work on to be ready for Wisconsin.”
UMD sweeps Providence
– Bulldogs rocking and rolling in a non-conference series
– Providence isn’t the greatest team in Hockey East by any stretch. Regardless, 12 goals is a lot and we can hope that offense translates to conference play.
Tech takes three from Minnesota State
– Well aren’t the Huskies a crazy surprise so far, with all their offense and the power play rocking it out. More details will probably be coming later this week in terms of a feature by Tech beat writer Daver Karnosky, so look for that.
Miami/SCSU
– I was expecting a little bit more out of the Huskies, but Miami is no slouch.
– Gaining a tie on Saturday will probably be a good thing moving forward.
CC in Alaska
– Not much to say here, beat the lesser-ranked team in conference foe UAA and lost to the higher-ranked team in Alaska. About par for the course.
UAA in Alaska
– Lost to CC and Union
– The losses aren’t promising, but the scoring is. They scored three or more goals 14 times last year and went 8-5-1 in those games … and had 10 wins total. The Seawolves haven’t gotten the wins yet, but if the goals keep coming and they can shore down their defense, good things may be on the way.
Sioux sweep Bemidji
– Would have thought that all the hype and bluster around the arena would have been good for the Beavers, but it may have been too much.
– Bemidji will undoubtedly be a factor in this league, but the Sioux showed a bit why they were the preseason number one favorites.
Wisconsin sweeps Alabama-Huntsville
– Really, the Badgers did what they should do here. Worth noting, however, is the Badger power play – 7 of the 12 goals scored were with the man advantage.
Nebraska-Omaha sweeps Minnesota
– Oh Dean Blais, how nice it must be to be back
– Probably not the start expected out of the Mavericks, but it was a great series for them.
– Minnesota obviously would have liked the win on Friday, but regardless, let’s go with cliches and say that the weekend was a good learning experience.
