Colgate 4 at Clarkson 4 (ot)
Senior Scott Freeman and freshman Matt Zarbo scored 1:57 apart midway through the third period to draw Clarkson even, extending the Golden Knights’ unbeaten streak to four games. After starting the season 0-36 on the power play, Clarkson finally broke through with three consecutive conversions (three for six on the night) to wrest the point from the Raiders. Freshman Chris Wagner, sophomores Thomas Larkin and Billy Rivellini and junior Austin Smith scored for Colgate; sophomore Alex Evin made 32 saves in the back. Knights rookie Ben Sexton was lost with what is deemed to be a broken arm, suffered while scoring the game’s first goal; junior Mark Borowiecki also scored in front of classmate Paul Karpowich, who made 36 stops.
Cornell 0 at St. Lawrence 3
Cornell fell to 0-3-0 this season while SLU’s one power-play goal in eight tries was all it needed to claim its first victory of the year. Sophomore Kyle Flanagan’s clutch score 6:47 into the third period proved to be the game-winner, as frosh Justin Baker and Jeremy Wick tacked on the game’s only other goals to stun the Big Red. Rookie Matt Weninger earned his first career win and shutout, stopping 29 of 29. Apart from junior Mike Garman’s 30 saves, Cornell’s only other “standout” may have been freshman Dustin Mowrey: His three third-period penalties partly served to extend Cornell’s winless run in Canton to five years and counting.
Princeton 3 at Yale 5
The Bulldogs and Tigers wedged eight goals, 76 shots and 21 penalties into a two-hour, five-minute game that saw Yale emerge victorious for the third time in three games this year. Playing at Ingalls Arena for the third time in three games (each team played in the Ivy Shootout in New Haven last weekend), Yale jumped out to a 3-1 lead and matched Princeton’s comeback attempts goal-for-goal the rest of the way. Juniors Kevin Peel and Chad Ziegler scored for Yale, joining seniors Broc Little and Chris Cahill (who scored twice). Senior Ryan Rondeau stopped 27 of 30 to improve to 2-0-0. Senior Alan Reynolds saved 41 in his first start of the year, playing behind goal-scorers Andrew Calof (freshman), Michael Sdao (sophomore) and Matt Arhontas (senior).
Quinnipiac 3 at Brown 3 (ot)
The Bobcats’ 3-1 lead through 47 minutes evaporated in a cloud of penalties, as QU sustained four minors and two power-play goals against in a sloppy third period. Sophomore Clay Harvey scored twice for the Q-Cats, and classmate Mike Dalhuisen chipped in as well while another classmate – Dan Clarke – stopped 34 of 37. Brown, meanwhile, clawed back to take a point in its home opener, getting goals from freshman Dennis Robertson, junior Jeff Buvinow and senior David Brownschidle in support of junior goalie Mike Clemente, who made 29 saves.
Rensselaer 4 at Dartmouth 1
Sophomore Marty O’Grady’s first goal of the year 58 seconds into the second period separated the Engineers from the host Big Green, stretching RPI’s unbeaten streak to seven games (4-0-3). Classmate C.J. Lee scored RPI’s power-play goal (1-5), but the Engineers’ scoring was paced by senior Chase Polacek, who potted two… including one short-handed halfway through the third. Freshman Cab Morris had a rough first outing for Dartmouth, making only 17 saves on 21 shots; sophomore Jason Bourgea’s second of the season was his lone supporting offense.
Union 2 at Harvard 1
Harvard senior Kyle Richter’s 33 saves kept the Crimson in the game, but sophomore Danny Biega’s goal just wouldn’t be enough to overcome the red-hot Dutchmen. Sophomore defenseman Greg Coburn’s long-distance rocket in the game’s 54th minute improved Union’s record to 6-1-2; the fact that it was scored on the power play extended Union’s streak to at least one PPG in each of its nine games this season. Junior Kelly Zajac scored the Dutchmen’s other goal, while sophomore Keith Kinkaid was only called on for 15 saves for the W.
Saturday, November 6
Colgate 1 at St. Lawrence 4
Sophomore Kyle Flanagan’s two goals boosted the Saints to a weekend sweep and their second win of the season. Rookie Jeremy Wick scored the game-winner in the second period, classmate Greg Carey lit the lamp as well, senior Sean Flanagan had three assists, and another freshman – Matt Weninger – stopped 31 of 32. Senior Francois Brisebois scored Colgate’s only goal in support of junior Alex Evin, who stopped 20 shots in defeat.
Cornell 6 at Clarkson 1
The Big Red took out three games’ frustration on the Golden Knights as six different Ithacans potted the puck in Potsdam. Rookie Andy Iles saved 35 shots in his – and his team’s – first win, and Cornell got goals from frosh Dustin Mowrey and Kirill Gotovets, sophomore Braden Birch, juniors Locke Jillson and Jordan Kary and senior Joe Devin. Senior Brandon DeFazio scored his team-leading third goal in defeat, while junior Paul Karpowich suffered through all six goals and 34 shots.
Princeton 4 at Brown 3
The Tigers came back from a 2-0 first-period road deficit, then held on for their first win of the year against a Brown team that defeated them 2-1 just seven days prior. Each team scored on the power-play and shorthanded in a wild one, and Bruno out-shot the usually slap-happy Tigers 40-34. Senior Matt Arhontas scored twice in 57 seconds to singlehandedly erase Princeton’s deficit early in the second period, and classmate Kevin Lohry and soph Michael Sdao finished off Princeton’s scoring. Junior Jack Maclellan opened the scoring for Brown, while seniors David Brownschidle and Harry Zolnierczyk also lit the lamp. Sophomore Mike Condon made 37 saves for the win, while rookie Marco DeFilippo stopped 30 for Brown.
Quinnipiac 1 at Yale 5
QU sophomore Jeremy Langlois’ goal in the game’s eighth minute seemed like ancient history when all was said and done, as the lethal Bulldogs blew three goals past junior Dan Clarke (21 saves) in 2:58 in the third period to bury the upstart Bobcats. Junior Brian O’Neill bookended those three goals, but senior goalie Ryan Rondeau (29 saves) also got help from three other seniors in Jeff Anderson, Denny Kearney and Broc Little, who chipped in a goal apiece.
Rensselaer 0 at Harvard 1
Junior center Alex Killorn walked in for the power-play game-winner with only 8.2 seconds left in regulation as Harvard won its first game of the year. Senior Kyle Richter earned his sixth career shutout with 19 stops, while junior counterpart Allen York made 22 saves in the heartbreaking loss. The defeat also snapped what had been the nation’s longest active unbeaten streak at seven.
Union 0 at Dartmouth 0 (ot)
Despite 66 total shots, neither team could solve the goaltending in the conference’s first scoreless draw. Union sophomore Keith Kinkaid stopped 29 to improve to 6-1-2, while junior James Mello had to make 37 saves in his first start of the year. The Dutchmen’s 0-4 power play marked the first time this season that Union was blanked on the advantage.
In retrospect..
Prediction precision: 5-4-3 (.542) last week, 25-11-8 (.659) overall.
As for my guest, Meli Mathis beat me by a game: 6-3-3, which entitles her (should she so choose) to predict against me again next week. I’ll have my vengeance.
