Velischek leaves Providence for USHL

Providence defenseman Alex Velischek has left the school to play for the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL.

The 20-year-old Velischek had a goal and 11 assists last season while playing in all 34 games as a freshman. He was also a co-winner of the Rev. Herman Schneider Most Valuable Freshman Award.

This year, the Kinnelon, N.J., native played in just nine games with a goal and an assist while reportedly dealing with an ankle injury.

Velischek, a fifth-round draft pick of Pittsburgh back in 2009 and son of former NHL defenseman Randy Velischek, is expected to join the Musketeers after the holiday break.
