Just two years out of college, former Lebanon Valley captain Spiros Anastas continues to build his hockey resume, joining the Western Michigan staff as a volunteer coach this season. Anastas spent last year as an assistant coach at his alma mater, helping the program make the transition from playing in the Division III ECAC West to the ACHA club level.
After looking at several Division III schools, Anastas accepted an offer from then-WMU coach Jeff Blashill to join his staff for the upcoming campaign. But Blashill resigned as head coach in June to join the Detroit Red Wings as an assistant coach.
This left Anastas wondering if he had made the right decision to go to WMU or even if the new coach, once he was hired, would want him.
Things couldn’t have worked out better, though, as new WMU coach Andy Murray has embraced Anastas, who will be working on video breakdown, player development and travel coordination for the upcoming season.
