The Dallas Stars signed two college underclassmen Monday in Boston University junior forward Alex Chiasson and Miami junior forward Reilly Smith.
Both players saw their teams eliminated in last weekend’s regional playoffs.
“We’re excited to have Alex join the (AHL’s) Texas Stars for the remainder of their season,” said Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk in a statement. “He has had an impressive college career and we look forward to watching him continue to develop as a professional in our system.”
Chiasson played in 107 games in three seasons for the Terriers, scoring 36 goals and 61 assists for 97 points. He served as an assistant captain this past season.
Smith will join the Stars for the club’s upcoming four-game road trip and will be added to the NHL roster.
Dallas’ third-round selection (69th overall) in the 2009 NHL draft, Smith led Miami and the CCHA with 30 goals and 18 assists in 39 games this season. The Hobey Baker finalist also won the CCHA goal-scoring title for the second straight year with 18 goals in league play and finished the season ranked second in the NCAA in goals and ninth in overall scoring (48 points)
“We are excited to have to Reilly join our organization after a very successful college career,” Nieuwendyk said in a statement. “We think that Reilly has proven that he has all the characteristics of a player that will succeed at the NHL level.”
