Dwayne Roloson has returned to Massachusetts-Lowell as a volunteer assistant coach.
Roloson, who graduated from UML in 1994, has played the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning and also helped lead the Edmonton Oilers to the 2006 Stanley Cup final and Tampa Bay to the Eastern Conference finals in 2011.
He is expected to remain in Lowell until a resolution is reached with the NHL lockout. Roloson is currently an NHL free agent.
“I feel this will be a great opportunity, to add to the UMass-Lowell hockey staff while coming back to a place that gave me so much,” Roloson said in a statement.
“Being able to add an alum like ‘Roli’ is tremendous,” said UML coach Norm Bazin. “He lived the experience as a student and player here at UMass-Lowell [and] then excelled in the National Hockey League for a number of years. He will be a tremendous resource for our guys to learn what it takes to be successful at this level and beyond.”
Rolson, who was inducted into the UML Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, is the second current NHL player to join their college team as a volunteer assistant, following R.J. Umberger at Ohio State earlier this month.
