Bit of a quiet weekend, as only five teams played a regular season game, with the Ivies wrapping up their preseason scrimmages and Union out of action. Still, plenty of things to focus on, highlighted by St. Lawrence’s two-night romp over Maine in Orono.
Line ’em up, sit ’em down: St. Lawrence is currently on a 6-0-1 streak against Hockey East teams following a sweep of Maine this weekend, and are off to their best road start since 1998-99. The Saints outscored the Black Bears by a combined 10-1 mark, with captain Kyle Flanagan following up a strong weekend at Western Michigan with four assists Friday and two goals Saturday. Greg Carey had a pair of helpers Friday and added two goals and two assists Saturday.
It’s still early, but Flanagan (11) and Carey (ten), are currently one-two in the nation in points, with Flanagan leading the nation in goals and Carey in assists.
Not to be lost in the shuffle is Matt Weninger’s play in net. Head coach Greg Carvel said Weninger has been working with new goalie coach Kris Mayotte, and it’s paid off so far. The junior stopped 66-of-67 shots on the weekend and Maine went 0-for-14 on the power play.
Langlois back; Connor Jones out: The good news? Quinnipiac forward Jeremy Langlois returned to action this weekend as the Bobcats took three points from Ohio State in Hamden. The bad news? They did it without forward Connor Jones, who is day-to-day, according to USCHO’s Brian Farrell. Still, this doesn’t sound too serious, and two goals apiece from Langlois and Matthew Peca certainly helped cover Jones’ absence.
Third period lapses cost RPI: This might be a weekend the Engineers want back. Twice, RPI had third period leads at Minnesota State, but they couldn’t hold either one and had to settle for a tie and overtime loss. The Mavericks scored two goals Friday to flip a 3-1 lead into a 3-3 tie and ripped off three straight scores to take a 4-3 third-period lead Saturday. Matt Neal’s goal in the waning minutes sent it to overtime, where Eriah Hayes sent RPI home with a loss.
