Historic Win
Oswego earned the 800th win in program history in convincing fashion on Saturday, rolling to a 10-1 win over Geneseo in a SUNYAC game. The Lakers improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference as 10 players scored.
Oswego has been playing hockey for 47 years at the NCAA level and owns a record of 800-435-51.
The Lakers were 3-of-6 on power-play opportunities, and Andrew Hare came up big in goal as he racked up 26 saves. Oswego has allowed a total of five goals in its first four games.
Stunning Victory
Gustavus came through with the first huge upset of the year, knocking off top-ranked St. Norbert, 2-1, on Saturday.
The Golden Gusties were anchored by the stellar goaltending play of Patrick Sullivan, who faced 40 shots and tallied 39 saves in his first start of the season. Gustavus improved to 3-1 overall while St. Norbert fell to 4-1.
Zach May and Ryan Johnson scored the goals for Gustavus, which managed only 19 shots. It marked the second consecutive game in which St. Norbert allowed two goals in a game after opening with three consecutive shutouts.
Working Overtime
Three of the Saturday games in the ECAC East went into overtime. Babson and New England College played to a 3-3 tie, New England got by Castleton, 3-2, and St. Anselm edged Massachusetts-Boston, 5-4. St. Anselm scored three power-play goals in the victory, including one by Tim King in OT. It was King’s second goal of the game. He also tallied one assist in the win. The fact that the Hawks were able to survive a close call is perhaps an indication that they are ready to live up to the hype of once again being the favorites in the Northeast-10.
Bulldogs Roll
Adrian is off to a 2-0 start after taking down Northland in a pair of games over the weekend. The highlight of the weekend was a 12-1 win over the Lumberjacks on Saturday, as the Bulldogs scored 10 or more goals in a game for the first time since November 2011. It’s the 18th time in program history that Adrian has hit the double-digit goal mark.
Shelby Gray paved the way in the win on Saturday, coming through with his first career hat trick. He also dished out one assist on a night when he scored a goal in each period. The Bulldogs beat Northland, 7-2, in the series opener, and now have their sights set on a showdown with rival Milwaukee School of Engineering this coming weekend. MSOE ended Adrian’s run of four consecutive MCHA Harris Cups last season.
Hot Start
Wisconsin-Eau Claire rolled to its fourth consecutive victory and is unbeaten through four games for the first time since 2008 after knocking off Bethel 3-2 on the road on Saturday.
The Blugolds took 40 shots in the game and got the game-winning goal when Jordan Singer punched the puck into the net in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. Singer also came through with an assist, and Alex Bjerk racked up 22 saves as the Blugolds maintained their perfect record.
In other SUNYAC action, freshman Chris Bennett scored his first career goal for Fredonia State in thrilling fashion as the Blue Devils knocked off Morrisville State 2-1 in overtime on Saturday. Bennett had his first shot attempt denied, but battled for a second shot and got the puck to go into the net to give Fredonia the OT win. The Blue Devils pushed their record to 3-2 overall and to 2-1 in the conference. Freshman Taylor Bourne also scored his first career goal for the Blue Devils.
