Former Denver forward Joe Casey passed away Monday night in Jackson Hole, Wy.
Casey was just 37.
According to a school-issued press release, the cause of death is still to be determined, but Casey reportedly felt ill over the weekend with what was described as flu-like symptoms.
“It is with shock and great sadness to learn of Joe’s passing,” Denver coach George Gwozdecky said in a statement. “He was a dedicated, enthusiastic and inspirational person who always played the game at full throttle. These qualities endeared him to his teammates and many friends at DU. He will be sorely missed by all.”
Casey played for the Pioneers from 1996-2000 and finished his career with 15 goals and 12 assists in 78 games. He was voted the team’s most inspirational and as well as its most improved player by his teammates during his senior season.
