Colgate eyeing new $37.8 million on-campus rink

If Colgate can get another $4.2 million in donations, the university will be able to build a brand-new athletic facility on campus, with the men’s and women’s hockey, lacrosse and soccer teams as its primary tenants.

Last weekend, Colgate’s board of trustees voted unanimously to proceed with building the $37.8 million, 97,000-square-foot facility, contingent on receiving $25 million in gifts. To date, $20.8 million has been received.

Starr Rink would be used primarily as a practice facility.

“These are exciting times not only for athletics, but for the university,” said athletics director Vicky Chun in a statement. “Support for the facility is a testament to great leadership by our president, trustees and the many alumni, families and friends that have donated their time and money toward the facility. Student-athletes across our 25 Division I teams will benefit from the facility as they continue to compete at the highest level and we will continue to attract the best and the brightest to Colgate.”
