Mallory Young has spent eight years with the Colby women’s team as a player and an assistant coach and on Wednesday, was named interim head coach for the 2013-14 season.
Young, a 2005 Colby graduate, takes over the team after former head coach David Venditti left to take the head women’s position at the University of New England.
“I’m very excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Young said in a statement. “That it’s happening at Colby makes it even more meaningful. I would be remiss if I did not thank Dave Venditti for bringing me back to Colby and working with me for four years. I wish him all the best.”
Young, a defenseman who played her senior season at Colby under Venditti, who had just received the head coaching job, finished her career with eight goals and two assists for 10 points in 84 games.
“We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Mallory’s experience on staff to lead our program at this time,” added Colby director of athletics Marcella Zalot. “Mallory is passionate about Colby and the sport of ice hockey and she has a strong assistant coaching background. She knows the league at a high level and she certainly understands the dynamics of being a student-athlete at Colby. I know she is ready to step into this role and I am pleased she has accepted our position.”
Young came back to Colby after serving as an assistant coach at Williams College. She also spent one year as an assistant at Massachusetts-Boston during the 2007-08 season. After graduating from Colby, Young was an assistant girls hockey coach at New Hampton School for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons and was also the head coach of the JV girls lacrosse team at New Hampton School.
“This is an exciting time for our program,” Young concluded. “We have a solid incoming class and a core group of upperclassmen who will continue to lead the team in a positive direction. With much work still to be done, I’m anxious about what lies ahead for the program.
“Being an alum of this program is special to me, as it is to everyone that has played Colby hockey. As one of the oldest programs in the country, we have a proud history. The connection to those before us is something I value and hope to continue to strengthen through our alumnae network.”
