Pass the hat
For those who enjoy throwing a hat out onto the ice, it was a good week that offered ample opportunities.
Freshman Nicole Schammel got things started on Monday when her hat trick lifted Minnesota State to its first conference win of the season, 5-1, over St. Cloud State, with Schammel adding an assist to her efforts.
Emily Fulton’s natural hat trick rescued No. 9 Cornell from an upset on the road at Colgate on Tuesday. Brianne Jenner had the primary assist on each as the Big Red, down a pair with just over six and half minutes left, rallied for a 3-2 victory. Fulton’s second goal tied the game with 68 seconds remaining in regulation with an extra attacker on the ice and her team on the power play. She completed her hat trick with another power-play goal at 2:06 of overtime.
No. 4 Harvard had two players record hat tricks during the week; surprisingly, neither came in the game where the Crimson scored nine times. Lyndsey Fry completed her hat trick in the final minute of the second period of Harvard’s 6-1 handling of Yale. Miye D’Oench added two goals with an assist. Mary Parker needed a minute less to get to three goals the following day at Brown, adding an assist along the way, as the Crimson cruised to a 7-1 triumph. Karly Heffernan tallied twice with two helpers, and D’Oench netted two more.
Perhaps the sweetest hat trick came from Blayre Turnbull for No. 3 Wisconsin. She struck three times on the power play and assisted on another power-play goal as the Badgers dumped No. 7 Minnesota-Duluth, 5-0, on the night they honored Turnbull and the rest of their senior class. Courtney Burke had a helper on all four goals by the PP unit. Annie Pankowski had a goal in her three-point game in support of Ann-Renee Desbiens’ 20-save shutout, her second blanking of the Bulldogs in as many days. She and UMD’s Kayla Black both proved impenetrable on Friday night when their teams battled to a scoreless tie, with Wisconsin winning the shootout point. Desbiens is second in the country with 11 shutouts, while Black ranks third with nine.
Beanpot begins
Harvard started its week in fine fashion, thrashing No. 6 Boston University in a Beanpot semifinal, 9-2. Sydney Daniels put the Crimson on top with just 34 seconds elapsed, and Fry’s assist on the play was her 100th point at Harvard. By the halfway point of the contest, the lead had grown to 5-0. Jessica Harvey and Hillary Crowe found the net twice.
Earlier, No. 1 Boston College came back to best Northeastern, 3-1. McKenna Brand struck first for the Huskies, but Emily Field tied the game 10 minutes later while the teams were skating four-on-four. Haley Skarupa sniped the game-winner at 11:29 of the final frame, and Northeastern was unable to rally before Andie Anastos hit an empty net. Katie Burt made 17 saves to win.
A couple more centuries
Amanda Pelkey’s goal at 3:45 of overtime gave Vermont a 2-1 win at Maine, and it was her 100th career point. Meghann Treacy’s 53 saves for the Black Bears were not enough, because Madison Litchfield only allowed a first-period goal to Victoria Hummel while making 26 stops. Dayna Colang tied it up early in the second on a power play with her 16th goal of the year.
Shelby Bram’s 100th point at Mercyhurst came when she opened the scoring at RIT on Friday in the Lakers’ 5-1 win. Emily Janiga scored twice, and she repeated that feat on Saturday as Mercyhurst won by a 3-0 score. Julia DiTondo won both games, including the 20-save shutout.
Three for the road
No. 10 Clarkson took to the road and went a perfect three-for-three.
The Golden Knights started the week on Tuesday at No. 8 St. Lawrence with a key 3-1 win. Olivia Howe put Clarkson ahead to stay in the second period and then assisted on Cayley Mercer’s insurance goal. Shea Tiley made 42 saves, and Christine Lambert had primary assists on all three goals.
Clarkson ground out a 2-1 win on Friday at Rensselaer. Tiley came up with another 27 stops. Cayley Mercer scored the first goal and assisted on Savannah Harmon’s winning tally. Alexa Gruschow scored an unassisted goal while short-handed for RPI.
The week ended with a 6-0 win at Union. Tiley needed only 16 saves to secure her shutout. Mercer scored twice, Howe had a goal and three helpers, and Lauren Lefler netted her first goal for Clarkson.
How the rest of the top 10 fared
For the second straight week, a ranked team overcame No. 5 Quinnipiac in Hamden on Friday night in overtime, only to be tripped up at Princeton on Saturday. This time it was Cornell. Hanna Bunton scored the deciding goal with 40 seconds left in OT, giving the Big Red back-to-back victories in sudden-death, 4-3. Kaitlin Doering had tied the game for Cornell with 6:18 to go in regulation. Quinnipiac got a lift from freshman Raquel Pennoyer who contributed a goal and an assist, her first points for the Bobcats.
On Saturday, Princeton’s Hilary Lloyd didn’t give Cornell the chance for more overtime heroics, scoring the winning goal with 79 ticks left on the third-period clock. Kimberly Newell made 39 saves in the Tigers’ 3-2 triumph. Princeton got a pair of tying goals, unassisted from Cassidy Tucker in the middle stanza and by Jaimie McDonell in the third period. Fulton scored the Big Red goals, both assisted by Jenner and Jillian Saulnier.
Quinnipiac rebounded with a 2-0 defeat of Colgate. Chelsea Laden celebrated her senior night with a 24-save shutout, her 13th. It was also her 22nd win on the season, most ever for a Quinnipiac netminder. Morgan Fritz-Ward and Nicole Connery scored the goals in the second period. Ashlynne Rando made 46 saves in defeat.
St. Lawrence had to settle for a 1-1 tie at Union on Friday. Shenae Lundberg yielded only an early goal to Megan Armstrong, denying 41 shots on the night. Kathryn Tomaselli got a third-period equalizer past Carmen MacDonald, who finished with 21 saves. The Saints came back with a 2-1 victory at Rensselaer, as Brooke Webster and Kayla Raniwski netted the tallies. MacDonald saved 24 shots.
Boston College added a 6-0 stroll past Connecticut to its week’s work. Anastos and Field had four-point games, with two goals for the former. Burt made 19 saves in her shutout.
Boston University got back in the win column at New Hampshire, 4-2. Victoria Bach and Maddie Elia had a goal and an assist, and Rebecca Leslie had three helpers.
North Dakota handed No. 2 Minnesota its second shutout loss of the season, 3-0, on Friday. Amy Menke scored on a short-handed breakaway late in the second period, and Josefine Jakobsen navigated around the defense for an unassisted goal a minute and a half later. Menke sealed the win into an empty net. Shelby Amsley-Benzie turned away 25 shots for the shutout. The Gophers came back to win, 3-1, on Saturday. Jakobsen struck with 77 seconds elapsed, but Dani Cameranesi tied it up on a power play. Hannah Brandt found the five-hole to give Minnesota its first lead of the weekend, and Rachel Ramsey added another power-play goal. Amanda Leveille’s 17 saves included stopping Leah Jensen on a breakaway.
Other action
Syracuse turned in a sweep on home ice over Robert Morris. Nicole Renault tallied the winner a couple of minutes after Maddie Collias had leveled the game at one in the third period for the Colonials. Jenn Gilligan made 25 saves. Heather Schwartz potted the deciding goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win. Sophomore Laurence Porlier scored her first career goal for the Orange.
Ohio State also got a home sweep, defeating Minnesota State by scores of 3-2 and 6-0. Lauren Spring scored Friday’s game-winner on the power play late in the third period, 39 seconds after Schammel’s short-handed goal, her second tally of the contest. Alexa Ranahan assisted on all three OSU scores. Kassidy Sauve stopped all 14 shots to blank the Mavericks on Saturday. Maggie Rothgery led the way with two goals and two assists; Katie Matheny also scored twice. Bryanna Neuwald had three helpers.
Sticking with a familiar theme, host Bemidj State swept St. Cloud State. Brittni Mowat backstopped a 3-1 win with 24 saves, and Kaitlyn Tougas put BSU on top to stay. Tougas scored the game’s only goal on Saturday while short-handed, and Mowat turned in a 14-save shutout.
Penn State split with Lindenwood. The Nittany Lions got two goals and an assist from Laura Bowman in Friday’s 3-2 win. The hosts bounced back with a 4-2 win on Saturday. Jordyn Constance got one of her three points when she assisted on Britannia Gillanders’ winning goal.
Laura Stacey’s third-period goal proved to be the difference in Dartmouth’s 4-3 win over Brown. Kaitlyn Keon and Sarah Robson each had a goal and two assists for the Bears.
Yale upended Dartmouth, 6-2, scoring the final four goals with under eight minutes left. Jackie Raines and Phoebe Staenz each lit the lamp twice, and Raines added an assist. Jaimie Leonoff made 28 saves.
Princeton defeated Colgate, 4-1, with Morgan Sly scoring twice.
Hayley Masters struck 38 seconds into overtime in Northeastern’s 2-1 win over Providence. Chloe Desjardins saved 26 shots.
Elaine Chuli made 45 saves for Connecticut as it battled back to earn a 2-2 tie at New Hampshire. Rebecca Fleming and Margaret Zimmer tallied in the second period to equal first-period goals by Kayla Mork and Cassandra Vilgrain for the Wildcats.
