Lake Superior State announced Thursday that sophomore defenseman Owen Headrick has left the program, forgoing this season and his final two years of eligibility with the program.
Headrick, who was selected by the Erie Otters in the 14th round (261st overall) of the 2013 OHL draft, gave his formal commitment to the Otters and agreed to a standard player agreement.
“We were disappointed to hear of Owen’s decision to leave the team midway through the season,” said LSSU coach Damon Whitten in a statement. “That being said, after meeting with him this morning, we understand his desire to pursue a different hockey path and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Through 24 games with the Lakers this season, Headrick was tied for fourth on the team in scoring with 15 points on two goals and 13 assists and ranked tied for fifth in WCHA defenseman scoring.
He had contributed just three assists in the Lakers’ last 12 contests.
In 63 career games with LSSU, Headrick accumulated seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points.
