St. Thomas stayed in first place in the MIAC, despite splitting a series with Concordia (Minn.).
The Tommies lost 5-4 in overtime Friday, but bounced back with a dominating 5-0 win Saturday. St. Thomas scored four times in the final period to secure the win, including one by Johnny Panvica, who ended his night with two goals.
Ben Myers turned in a solid performance in goal, stopping 20 shots to nail down his 10th win of the season. The Tommies have won three of their last four and have recorded a shutout in each of the last two weekends. St. Thomas improved to 11-6-4 overall and to 9-2-1 in the MIAC.
Concordia is now 12-8-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the conference.
It was a different story on Friday when the Cobbers skated to their third consecutive win. Zach Doerring scored the game-winner in overtime to lift Concordia to the win. Doerring has scored six goals this season and has also dished out 12 assists. Jon Grebosky was the top scoring threat in the game, scoring twice. He has come through with nine goals and 10 assists this season. Dalton Mills scored for the Cobbers as well, and has scored four career goals against the Tommies. Jeremy Johnson dished out four assists in the win. Sam Nelson earned the win in goal, securing his eighth victory of the season.
Hamline capped off its weekend against Augsburg with a 2-2 tie, but the Pipers picked up the extra point as Brady Crabtree scored the winning goal in the shootout. The 10-shot shootout was the second-longest in conference history. Hamline improved to 10-8-5 overall and is 7-4-3 in the conference after playing in a ninth overtime game of the season. The Pipers moved into a three-way tie for second place.
Augsburg is now 13-3-5 overall and 7-1-4 in the MIAC and is also tied for second place. Drew Anderson and Trevor Stewart both scored for the Auggies.
Hamline, which won the series opener 4-1 on Friday, trailed 2-0 before mounting a comeback. Russ Jordan scored his 18th goal of the year with under three minutes to play and Mitch McPherson scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime. Justin Quale stopped 45 shots, two short of his career high. He made three saves in the overtime and nine shots in the shootout.
Saint Mary’s put itself in a three-way tie for second with a sweep of Gustavus. The Cardinals won the opener 3-1 and finished off the series with a 2-0 win. The Cardinals are now 12-8-3 overall and 8-5-1 in the conference. Gustavus fell to 2-15-4 overall and to 1-10-1 in the MIAC. Aaron Davis played a pivotal role in the success of the Cardinals, particularly Saturday, when he recorded a career-high 31 saves as he recorded his first career shutout. Bob Kinne and Jay Heinle both scored goals for the Cardinals as they won their second consecutive game.
Saint Mary’s ended a three-game winless streak Friday, thanks in part to Kyle Meeh and Chad Cesarz each tallying a goal and an assist.
Wisconsin-Stevens Point dominated its two opponents over the weekend, topping Wisconsin-Stout 6-1 and rolling to a 6-3 win over Wisconsin-Superior. In the win over the Blue Devils, the Pointers scored three goals in the first and three goals in the third to pick up their fourth WIAC win of the season. Lawrence Cornellier paced the offense with two goals and an assist, while Willem Nong-Lambert scored a goal and dished out two assists. The Blue Devils fell to 10-11-2 overall and to 2-4 in the conference. They have lost three consecutive games.
On Saturday, Wis.-Stevens Point stretched its winning streak to three games with its victory over Wis.-Superior. The Pointers are 16-4-3 overall and 5-1 in the WIAC. The Yellow Jackets fell to 7-15-1 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Logan Fredericks paced the Pointers with a pair of goals and Kyle Sharkey dished out two assists. Ryan Bittner tallied two assists as well.
Wisconsin-River Falls won its fourth consecutive game Friday night with a 2-0 win over Wis.-Superior. The Falcons, who have won 10 of their last 12, got goals from Mike Fazio and Aussie Miller while Zach Quinn recorded his third shutout of the season. Quinn made 29 saves. Fazio’s goal was his sixth of the season. Millier’s goal was his third. Wis.-River Falls is now 12-10-1 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Concordia (Wis.) and St. Scholastica split their weekend NCHA series. The Falcons, ranked in the top 15 for the first time in program history, won the opener 3-2 in overtime, but the Saints bounced back Saturday with a 5-3 win. The Falcons are now 12-8-1 overall and 9-6-1 in the NCHA. The Saints are 12-8-1 as well and are 10-5-1 in the conference. The Saints scored the first five goals in Saturday’s win, including one by Josh Hansen, who is on late-season scoring surge, tallying four goals in his last five games. Hansen also dished out an assist in the win. Brandon Millin came through with a goal and an assist as well, while Steven Phee dished out two assists. Peter Megariotis stepped up big in goal for the Saints, stopping 20 shots to earn the win.
In Friday’s game, Concordia rallied for a win over St Scholastica. The Falcons trailed 2-1 entering the third period before Adam Fauchoux scored with less than a minute left in regulation to force overtime. Taylor Gauld scored the game-winner in the extra session to lift the Falcons to their third consecutive win. The goal was the first of the game-winning variety for Gauld this year. Concordia, which has won more games than it did all of last year, also got a goal from Eric Therrien, while Jack Romanuik made 15 saves to earn his ninth win of the year.
Lake Forest put on a show offensively Saturday night in a win over Aurora, scoring a season-high seven goals in a 7-1 victory over the Spartans. Seven different players scored for the Foresters, including Bron Loiselle, who came through with his ninth goal of the year. Ryan Kruss and Austin Aksoy scored their first career goals in the win and Travis Hill tallied a goal and an assist. Louis-Phillipe De Courcy made his first career start in the game and racked up 17 saves to earn the win. The Foresters improved to 11-9 overall and to 7-8 in conference play. They have won their last two games.
Aurora slipped to 4-15-1 overall and to 4-10-1 in the conference. Liam Stirtzinger scored the lone goal for the Spartans.
The Milwaukee School of Engineering finished off its series with Lawrence Friday night, skating to a 2-2 tie against the Vikings. The Raiders were coming off a 3-0 win over the Vikings Thursday and nearly won Friday’s game as well after pushing in front 2-1 on goals by Brandon Unser and Nick Redmon. Austin Frank of Lawrence tied the game 2-2 early in the third. Neither team scored in overtime. The Raiders are now 9-7-5 overall and 6-6-4 in the conference. The Vikings fell to 5-13-3 overall and to 4-9-3 in conference play, but with the tie, they ended a five-game losing streak.
The Raiders, who have won four of their last six, opened the series with a win thanks to the effort of goalie Austin Campbell, who made 28 saves to record his first career shutout. Gage Christianson scored his 12th goal of the year in the win. It was his sixth power-play goal. He leads the team in goals scored.
