Western Michigan alums Abbott, DeKeyser to be inducted into WMU Hockey Ring of Honor

Western Michigan alums Steve Abbott and Danny DeKeyser will be inducted into the WMU Hockey Ring of Honor on Saturday, July 28.Abbott earned four letters at WMU from 1979 to 1983, appearing in 64 games between the pipes and winning 28 games. During his time as a Bronco, he was named to the CCHA All-Academic First Team during the 1980-81 and 1981-82 seasons. He also earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American honors during the 1982-83 season.After his graduation he returned to British Columbia as an assistant coach and goaltending coach for the New Westminster Bruins. He later graduated from the University of Houston Law Center, where he was a member of the Houston Law Review. In 2007, he was elected to the membership in the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation. Abbott has been recognized nationally for his work in commercial litigation and continues to practice law in Houston.DeKeyser is one of just one of three players in program history to twice be named an All-American. After a breakout freshman season, DeKeyser helped lead Western Michigan to a CCHA tournament championship in 2012. That season, he earned First Team All-CCHA honors and become just the second player in program history to be honored as the CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman. The following season he repeated as the CCHA Best Defensive Defenseman and as First Team All-CCHA selection. In his three seasons as a Bronco, he played in 118 games, scoring 12 goals and adding 37 assists for 49 points. He also helped the team to back-to-back NCAA tournament berths in 2011 and 2012.DeKeyser then signed with the Detroit Red Wings and has played in 381 games heading into the 2018-19 season.
