The Colorado College Tigers remained unbeaten as they defeated Michigan Tech 3-2 to complete a weekend sweep on Saturday night.
Mark Cullen and Peter Sejna each had a goal and two assists and Jeff Sanger made 26 saves for CC (4-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA).
Greg Amadio and Tim Laurila scored for the host Huskies and Matt Ulwelling had two assists. Brian Rogers made 28 saves for Tech (1-5-1, 1-5-0).
“It’s a weekend sweep against a good team,” said Colorado College coach Scott Owens, “a team that’s going to win games in this building.”
The only goal in the first period was scored by the Tigers’ Sejna on assists from Cullen and Justin Morrison at 5:24.
After an interference penalty was assessed to Tech’s Jaron Doetzel, Mike Stuart gave CC a 2-0 lead when he scored a power-play goal 7:49 into the middle period.
Michigan Tech responded quickly though. Just 10 seconds after Stuart’s goal, sophomore defenseman Greg Amadio took a pass from Ulwelling, skated in alone on the left side, and shot the puck through Sanger’s five-hole for his first collegiate goal.
Colorado College then made it a two-goal game again with 3:11 left in the second period. While skating with a four-on-three advantage, Cullen fired the puck between Rogers’ legs from close range to make it 3-1.
The Huskies made it a 3-2 game 7:45 into the third period. During a delayed-penalty call on CC, Laurila batted a loose puck past Sanger from a crowd in front of the net.
Tech had several chances to tie the game in the final minutes of the game but Sanger and the Tigers’ defense held the Huskies off to ensure the victory.
“They threw everything at us in the third period,” Owens said. “I’m happy with the four points and I’m happy with the way we battled and competed.”
“It was a huge win for us,” said Sejna. “Four points on the road is always important.”
Said Michigan Tech coach Tim Watters: “I thought the team played a much better game tonight. It was a hard-fought win for CC. They have a real nice hockey club. They’re going to compete for one of the top two or three spots in our league.”
Colorado College finished 2-for-6 on the power play. Michigan Tech was 0-for-4.
The Tigers return home to face Minnesota-Duluth next weekend. The Huskies will continue their homestand by entertaining Minnesota State-Mankato.
