Kohansky Shorthander Saves Brown In OT

Brown senior Matt Kohansky scored a shorthanded goal with 13 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Bears to a 5-4 victory over Moncton Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium.

Brown took a 1-0 lead just 3:01 into the game on a John Petricig power-play score. However, Moncton’s Maxime Bugeaud tallied a power-play goal of his own less than seven minutes later to tie the game.

Freshman Chris Busby lit the lamp for the Bears 1:35 into the second stanza, and senior Doug Janjevich extended the lead to 3-1 at 8:21 of the second.

The two-goal cushion, however, was short-lived as Moncton’s Maxime Savard tallied at the 11:58 mark to close the gap, and teammate Sylvain Rodier added a power-play score to knot the game at three less than a minute later.

Rodier notched his second goal of the game, this one four-on-four, at 14:14 of the final stanza to give the Blue Eagles their first lead of the game.

However, Brown wasted no time in scoring as sophomore Keith Kirley added a power-play goal to tie the game at four with 3:59 remaining in regulation.

In overtime, with time running out and the Blue Eagles on a power play, Kohansky broke out of the defensive zone, skated coast-to-coast with a Moncton defender in hot pursuit and managed to get a backhander through the pads of goalie Dominic Blouin for the winner.

For the game, Blouin finished with 41 saves, while juniors Brian Eklund and Graham McNally and freshman Yann Danis combined to stop 14 Blue Eagle shots for Brown. Eklund totaled seven, McNally stopped three and Danis made four saves.

The Bears will open their season next Friday, November 3, as they host Harvard in an ECAC contest at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night, November 4, marks the 15th Annual Mayor’s Cup as defending champion Brown hosts Providence College in a 7:00 contest.
