Concordia Rallies To Tie St. Mary’s

Concordia’s Tony Castaneda scored with nine seconds to go in regulation as the Cobbers tied St. Mary’s 3-3. Castaneda’s goal came after the Cobbers pulled goalie Bryan Howard and capped a series of events that helped the Cobbers erase a 3-1 deficit with only two minutes to play in the game.

St. Mary’s scored two goals in the first period before Brian Nelson scored the first goal of the season for Concordia midway through the second period and the teams skated into the dressing room with the Cardinals clinging to the 2-1 lead.

St. Mary’s scored 1:12 into the third period and hung on to the lead until the Cobbers stepped up to start the late-game heroics. Nick Bourdon started the comeback when he scored with just under two minutes remaining. Coach Steve Baumgartner then pulled Howard in favor of an extra skater, and Castaneda made the move pay off by finishing off a break from the right side.

The teams then played a scoreless five-minute overtime period. Both Howard and St. Mary’s goalie Eric Richardson had 34 saves.
