Fast Start Propels River Falls Over Stout

Wisconsin-River Falls scored four goals in the first period and coasted to a 7-2 victory over Wisconsin-Stout in the teams’ NCHA opener.

At the 3:25 mark of the opening period, Dan Miller found a streaking Adam Kragthorpe, who beat Blue Devil goaltender Justin Wiskie for a 1-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, Tim Beres’ first goal of the season, a slap shot from the right circle, gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Freshman Rob Novak added his third goal of the season, and Jess Johnson scored his first collegiate goal to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead after a period.

Stout cut the lead to 4-2 in the first three minutes of the second period. After Cullen Flaherty scored to make it 4-1, Lewie Kellin’s diving goal cut the lead in half.

The Falcons answered with three unanswered goals. Senior Jeff Bernard scored twice while freshman Jamie Steinert added a shorthanded goal for the final score.

The Falcons dominated the game, outshooting the Blue Devils 43-19. Landon Luther, in for the injured Jacque Vezina, made 17 saves for the win. Justin Wiskie stopped 36 shots in the loss.
