Mike Maturo scored two goals and added an assist, leading Dartmouth to a 6-3 upset of No. 5 New Hampshire in the first round of the Ledyard National Bank Auld Lang Syne Classic on Friday night.
Dartmouth (4-6-0) broke the ice first when Chris Taliercio scored 5:06 into the opening period. New Hampshire (12-4-3) answered just 50 seconds later on a Sean Austin goal.
Dory Tisdale and Maturo staked Dartmouth to a 3-1 lead before Colin Hemingway cut the UNH deficit to one, 3-2, on a power play goal with 2:56 left in the first.
Dartmouth’s Mike Murray scored the lone goal of the second period for a 4-2 lead.
In the third, Maturo had his second of the game for a 5-2 Big Green advantage with 11:53 to go.
UNH’s Darren Haydar and Dartmouth’s Chris Baldwin traded goals at 10:20 and 14:56, respectively, to account for the final score. The six goals were the most scored by Dartmouth this season.
In the nets, Dartmouth’s Nick Boucher had 36 saves. Ty Conklin had 21 for UNH before being relieved by Michael Ayers who finished with two.
For Dartmouth, Murray had one goal and two assists, while UNH’s Garrett Stafford had three assists.
On Saturday the consolation game will feature New Hampshire and Miami, while Dartmouth and Vermont will tangle for the championship.
