Down 1-0 early, St. Cloud rallied for five unanswered goals to gain a 5-2 win over visiting Michigan Tech on Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
MTU gained a quick lead when Tom Kaiman scored on an unassisted goal at 12:52 before the Huskies tallied five straight to take control of the game.
First up for SCSU was senior Brandon Sampair, who tied the game at 14:00. Junior Duvie Westcott gained the next goal at 15:18 on an unassisted effort to make it 2-1 at the end of the first.
Junior Tyler Arnason scored his 100th career point when he notched the eventual game-winner on a power-play goal at 2:54 of the second with an assist from Sampair.
In the third period, Jeff Finger scored his third goal of the season with an assist from Matt Hendricks at 6:26 before Derek Eastman scored the Huskies’ final tally with an assist from Sampair at 13:40, shorthanded. For Sampair, it was his 100th career point.
MTU added a final goal at 19:30 of the third when Brad Patterson scored with assists from Mat Snesrud and Paul Cabana.
Scott Meyer was the goalie of record for SCSU with 22 saves, while Brian Rogers had 36 saves for MTU. SCSU outshot MTU by a mark of 41-24.
The win pushes SCSU’s record to 16-4-1 overall and 11-4-0 in the WCHA, while MTU falls to 5-15-1, 3-12-0 WCHA. The two teams will tangle again Saturday at the NHC. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
