Colgate Wins Fourth In A Row

Freshman goaltender David Cann extended his personal winning streak and Colgate’s streak to four games with 23 saves in the Red Raiders 2-1 victory against Vermont in ECAC action Friday night.

The victory snapped Colgate’s three-game home losing skid in Starr Rink. Cann has started in the last six games going 4-2-0 with a 2.18 goals against average, .927 save percentage (164 saves).

After a scoreless first period, both teams scored all the goals in the contest in a four-minute span of the second period beginning with a goal by Colgate’s Pat Varecka 2:42 into the period. Bryan Long rifled a shot from the left point and Varecka deflected the puck into the top left corner of the net off the shaft of his stick for his first marker of the year.

Vermont evened the game at 5:44 of the period when Patrick Sharp scored on the backhand off a rebound on J.F. Caudron’s shot from just inside the left face-off circle.

Dan Stay scored the game-winning goal 6:33 into the second period. Sean Nolan took a shot
from inside the right face-off circle that rebounded to Stay in front of the net and he put it in for his second goal in as many games after not recording a goal in his first 59 career games.

Colgate resumes action in Starr Rink tomorrow against Dartmouth. The Big Green defeated Colgate 3-2 on Jan. 12 in the first meeting this year. Vermont travels to Cornell tomorrow. The Catamounts fell 3-2 in ot in the first meeting with the Big Red on Jan. 12.
