Rynshoven Scores Two As Mercyhurst Stymies UConn

Peter Rynshoven netted two goals and assisted on another to lead Mercyhurst past Connecticut 6-4 at the Mercyhurst Ice Rink on Friday evening.

UConn falls to 10-15-4 overall, 10-8-3 in the MAAC, while Mercyhurst improves to 16-9-2 overall, 16-4-1 in the conference.

After Mike Boylan gave the Huskies their only lead of the game at the 4:12 mark of the first period on the power play, Mercyhurst went on to record the next three goals. Jeff Gould nailed a shot at the 5:25 mark on a Rynshoven assist, followed by an Adam Tackaberry power-play tally just under four minutes later.

Jody Robinson opened the second period with a power-play goal, giving the Lakers the 3-1 advantage.

Connecticut’s Derek Stephens then recorded his first collegiate point at the 7:49 mark on an assist from Matt Owens, bringing UConn within one goal, but Rynshoven netted his first goal of the night on the power play with 1:36 remaining in the stanza.

Mercyhurst took the 5-2 lead 3:41 into the third period on a Brad McDonald goal, but UConn’s Michael Goldkind raised the Huskies’ hopes midway through the third with help from Herhal and Ciro Longobardi.

Connecticut then closed the gap to one goal at the 14:01 mark with another power-play tally from Ron D’Angelo, but Rynshoven sealed the Mercyhurst victory by netting an insurance goal with one second remaining in regulation.

Artie Imbriano suffered the loss in net, recording 16 saves, while Mercyhurst’s Peter Aubry stopped 27 UConn shots. Mercyhurst was 3-for-4 on the power play while Connecticut was 2-for-6.
