The Union Skating Dutchmen defeated the Yale Bulldogs by a score of 5-1 as the Dutchmen were able to avenge a 4-3 loss suffered at the hands of the Bulldogs on December 9th and more importantly they were able to gain critical points in the conference standings and jumped over Yale in the standings.
Union senior co-captain Bryan Yackel lit the lamp with his third goal of the season at 3:53 of the first period to give the Dutchmen the 1-0 lead.
Union added to that lead when sophomore Randy Dagenais scored his second goal of the season (and second of his career) to put the Dutchmen ahead 2-0 at 13:08 of the first period.
The Bulldogs held a 13-1 shot advantage through the first 14 minutes of the second period before Union sophomore Kris Goodjohn scored his seventh goal of the season at 17:26 of the second period while the Dutchmen were skating with a five on three advantage.
Yale outshot Union 14-7 in a period that saw the Bulldogs fail to convert on five straight power play opportunities and trail 3-0 going into the final stanza.
Yale lost Jeff Hamilton just 32 seconds into the third period when he received a five-minute major for hitting from behind and the accompanying game misconduct. The Dutchmen were able to capitalize on the five-minute power play as senior Jason Ralph scored his 11th goal of the season at 5:12 of the third period to put the Dutchmen up 4-0.
Yackel put the Dutchmen up 5-0 when he gathered the rebound off a Lombard kick save, and slid the puck past the diving Yale netminder with 11:27 remaining.
Yale pulled starting goalie Dan Lombard at 11:27 of the third period. He finished with 22 saves in 51:27 minutes in net. Freshman Peter Dobrowolski had two saves as he played the final 8:33 in goal.
Union netminder Brandon Snee lost his bid for a shut out at 15:03 of the final period when senior Lee Jelenic put the Bulldogs on the board.
Snee finished the game with 33 saves. Yale’s Lombard had 22 saves while Dobrowolski had one.
Union is now 11-13-3 overall and 7-9-1 in the ECAC and Yale is now 11-13-0 overall and 7-10-0 in conference play. Union hosts Princeton on Saturday and Yale travels to Rensselaer.
