Ice Griffs Move On To MAAC Semifinals

Four different players scored and netminder Stephen Fabiilli notched 22 saves as Canisius defeated Connecticut, 4-1, to advance to the semifinals of the MAAC tournament Saturday night.

Rob Martin opened the scoring in the first period when he scored a goal on a bad bounce through UConn goalie Jason Carey’s legs at the 9:53 mark of the first period.

Todd Houston received a pass from Steve Birch and broke out in front of the UConn defense at the 5:44 mark of the third period.

Three minutes later Daryl Pierce nailed a shot from the point to raise the score to 3-0.

UConn’s Michael Anderson charged the net to break Canisius’ shutout with seven minutes remaining in regulation, but Canisius sealed the victory with an empty-net goal by Paul DiPasquale with five seconds remaining.

UConn’s Carey suffered the loss in goal, stopping 34 Ice Griff shots.

Canisius now stands with a 17-11-4 overall record, 14-9-4 in conference. UConn, the No. 5 seed, concludes its season with a record of 12-19-4 overall, 12-12-3 in the MAAC.
