St. Lawrence scored five goals in the third period to pull away from the Colgate Raiders for a 6-1 victory at Appleton Arena. Six different players scored for the Saints, and five had two point games.
Despite outshooting the Raiders 30-7 in the first two periods of play, the Saints were only able to take a 1-0 lead after the first two periods of regulation. Freshman forward Christin Powers opened the Saints’ scoring at 8:10 of the second period on a two-on-one rush with teammate Whitney Carbone. Carbone slid the puck across to Powers in the slot, and Powers managed to find the five-hole on Raider goaltender Lindsay Bourne.
Shannon Smith gave the Saints a 2-0 lead at 5:37 into the third period on a power-play goal before the Raiders’ Shelby Nelson closed the gap in the Saints’ lead, scoring just 11 seconds later.
Trisha Powers answered 62 seconds later for the Saints, with assists from linemates Gina Kingsbury and Chera Marshall, giving the Saints a 3-1 lead.
That goal started a ripple effect, as the Saints notched three more in the last 12 minutes of regulation.
Senior Jessica Wilson showed her poise with the puck in front of the net as she placed the puck over the right shoulder of the Raider goaltender, and Meghan Maguire notched her third goal of the season.
As Maguire and Kingsbury broke down the ice on a two-on-one. Kingsbury made an amazing pass, sliding the puck to Maguire just above the crease and hitting Maguire’s stick. All Maguire had to do was direct the puck towards the net past Bourne.
Ricki-Lee Doyle finished off the Saints scoring with a goal 13 seconds left in regulation, with an assist to Amanda Sargeant.
Saints goaltender Rachel Barrie finished the game with 24 saves, 18 from the third period. Bourne finished the game with an outstanding 43 saves.
These two teams meet again Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
