Pioneers Pick Up Steam, Cruise By Under-18ers

Junior Jon Foster scored one goal and added two assists to lead the Denver Pioneers to a 6-2 win over the U.S. National Under-18 Team in exhibition action Friday at Magness Arena. Six different Pioneers scored as Denver overcame a 2-0 deficit early in the first period to get the win.

After Brandon Scero’s second goal of the game at 9:54 of the first stanza, junior Kevin Ulanski’s goal at 8:00 broke the ice for the Pioneers. Sophomore Gabe Gauthier’s power-play goal tied it at 2-2 with 49 seconds left in the first period.

Junior Luke Fulghum gave Denver its first lead at 10:33 of the second period and Foster’s power-play goal at 14:12 made it a two-goal edge. Freshman Mike Handza scored at 19:53 of the period to stake Denver to a 5-2 lead heading into the third.

Freshman J.D. Corbin’s goal iced the 6-2 win.

Sophomore Brett Skinner and senior Lukas Dora added two assists for Denver. The Pioneers outshot the U.S. team 35-21 and went 2-for-5 on the power play.

The Pioneers host the University of British Columbia in another exhibition game Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. MT.
