Bryan Worosz stopped 39 shots as Canisius skated to a 1-1 draw with visiting Lake Superior State Friday night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The Griffs are now 0-1-2 overall, while Lake Superior State is now 0-0-1.
It was the third time that the two schools have met, and the third time the game has ended in a tie. Last season, the Griffs and LSSU played to 2-2 and 4-4 draws in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
Canisius freshman Michael Cohen scored his team-leading second goal of the season at the 14:35 mark of the first period to give Canisius a 1-0 lead. Cohen took a pass from Justin Carré, skated around the net and banked a shot off Laker goalie Matt Violin’s skate and between his pads for the early 1-0 advantage. Carré picked up his third assist of the season on the goal.
After a scoreless second period, things looked like the Griffs would pick up their first win over a school from the CCHA and from a member of the “Big Four” conferences. However, with 31 seconds remaining, LSSU’s Dominic Osman scored the game-tying goal as the Lakers skated with the extra attacker from the open net at the other end of the rink. Osman found the puck on the left side of the net and beat Worosz just inside the post for the equalizer.
Worosz made five saves in the overtime period to preserve the tie. Violin finished the game with 16 saves for the Lakers.
