Top-ranked North Dakota used three power-play goals and Jordan Parise stopped all 30 Michigan Tech shots as the Fighting Sioux gained a 4-0 WCHA victory the Huskies Saturday night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
“I was pleased with our effort tonight,” said Tech coach Jamie Russell. “We had our chances, but didn’t capitalize. I thought our goaltending was solid and we competed hard. They’re an awfully good team, as good as we’ve seen this year.”
It was a scoreless first period, however, Tech’s Chris Conner just missed scoring his sixth shorthanded goal of the season 2:45 into the stanza as he made a nice move but had his shot just graze off the outisde of the goalpost. Despite no goals being scored, it was an entertaining first period.
North Dakota took at 1-0 lead at 10:52 as Brandon Bochenski notched a power-play goal and then Zach Parise put one home at 17:46 and the visitors had a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.
UND got power play goals 1:19 apart in the back half of the third period as part of a five-minute power play after Lars Helminen was charged with a major penalty for roughing Sioux netminder Parise.
With just 1:04 UND’s Ryan Hale and Tech’s John Scott dropped the gloves and went toe-to-toe. Scott gained the decision and both players earned fighting majors/game disqualification penalties.
