Clarkson picked up its first win and dealt Wayne State (1-1-0) its first setback of the season by scoring three third-period goals in a 5-3 win.
Mac Faulkner scored short-handed 63 seconds into the third period to tie the game. Grant Clitsome scored the game-winner at the 5:54 mark and Faulkner added an empty-net marker.
The Warriors started quickly as Steve Kovalchik netted his first goal of the campaign on a shot from the blueline just 1:58 into the game on the power play.
The Golden Knights tied the game on an even-strength goal by David Cayer at the 4:51 mark of the opening period. The first period was even with each team scoring once on 10 shots on goal.
Clarkson took a 2-1 lead 3:09 into the middle stanza on a goal by John Sullivan.
WSU battled back as freshman Tylor Michel stripped the puck from a CU defenseman while the Warriors were short-handed and beat Golden Knight goalie David Leggio.
Wayne State went ahead 3-2 on a power-play goal by Jason Bloomingburg. His goal came on a redirect of Greg Poupard’s blueline shot.
WSU outscored the guests 2-1 in the second period despite being outshot 14-12.
The Knights then took over for their first victory of the season.
Clarkson (0-3-1)won the shots on goal battle in the third period, 11-10, and the scoreboard battle 3-0 to claim the victory.
WSU sophomore goalie Will Hooper was credited with 30 saves in the contest. Dustin Traylen started for Clarkson and stopped 12 of 13 Warrior shots before being lifted midway through the game after incurring his second minor penalty. Leggio turned aside 17 of WSU’s 19 shots in the final 30:59 for the win.
Wayne State scored two power-play goals in eight chances, while Clarkson went zero-for-nine with the man-advantage.
