Junior goaltender Roxanne Gaudiel made 34 saves and junior co-captain Heather Jackson scored the lone goal as No. 8 Princeton shut out Mercyhurst 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
Mercyhurst (7-3-2) controlled the shots throughout the game, outshooting Princeton 12-2 in the first period, 12-8 in the second and 10-2 in the third for a 35-12 advantage in the game.
While the Lakers controlled the shot count, Princeton (4-3-1) controlled the scoreboard because of Jackson’s goal.
The Tigers scored at 15:46 of the middle period when Jackson wristed a shot over Mercyhurst senior netminder Desi Clark’s shoulder in working a 2-on-1 with sophomore forward Liz Keady. It was Jackson’s second goal of the season.
Both goalies made excellent saves throughout the contest, but Gaudiel was more active. The Lakers pulled Clark, who started her 48th successive game between the pipes, for an extra attacker with a minute left, but couldn’t get the equalizer.
Mercyhurst lost for just the first time in its last six games as Princeton widened its advantage in the all-time series between the teams to 6-3-1.
Princeton returns to action on Wednesday night when Yale visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m. Mercyhurst will embark on a four-game road trip starting next weekend at New Hampshire. The Lakers will play No. 2 Dartmouth Saturday at 1:00pm at UNH and No. 7 New Hampshire Sunday at 4 p.m. The Sunday game will be part of the USCHO.com Game of the Week broadcast schedule.
