Bemidji State opened its home schedule with a 4-3 nonconference win over Minnesota State Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,526.
The Beavers (3-0-0), who snapped MSU’s seven-game unbeaten streak against Bemidji State, capitalized on 4 of 12 power play attempts in the game.
The game’s first goal came at 1:34 when BSU defenseman Cody Bostock took a power-play shot from the point and the puck deflected off of the stick of an MSU defenseman and beat junior goaltender Chris Clark between the pads. BSU’s second goal, also a power-play marker, came at 11:05 of the first when senior forward Ryan Huddy tapped a rebound past Clark.
MSU (0-1-0) responded with its first goal of the game, which came on a five-on-three situation at 17:34 of the first. Senior forward Brock Becker scored after Kyle Peto’s shot bounced off of BSU netminder Matt Climie.
The Beavers took a 3-1 lead when Luke Erickson scored from the side on the power play at 6:13 of the second period.
The Mavericks pulled within one when junior forward Travis Morin scored on the power play on a rebound at 5:17 of the third. MSU tied the game at 10:32 when junior forward Kurtis Kisio beat Climie with a wrist shot on the power play. BSU regained the lead at 13:36 on a four-on-three power play when Rob Sirianni batted in a rebound for the game-winning goal.
Huddy, Bostock, Erickson, and Sirianni each had a goal and an assist for BSU. The Mavericks were led by Morin and Becker, who each had a goal and assist, and junior forward David Backes, who contributed two helpers.
The Mavericks and the Beavers (square-off again Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. at BSU’s John Glas Fieldhouse.
