BU scored three power play goals on five opportunities and captain Cara Hendry netted three points to lead the Terriers to their first victory in program history by a 4-1 margin over Union College on Friday at Walter Brown Arena.
Genevieve Laing started the scoring quickly when she put a rebound past Union goalie Amanda Hanson 1:58 into the first period. Laing skated by three Union players before leaving a drop-pass for Emily Schwarz just inside Union’s blue-line. She continued to elude the defense, finding herself all alone on the right side of the Union crease where she snapped in a rebound off a Jessica Lortie blast.
Hendry tried to add to the Terrier lead late in the first period when her shot from the top of the crease trickled in through traffic, but the goal was waived off. Hendry found her way on the score sheet at 1:16 of the second period, with a power-play goal, when she buried a pass from Erin Seman past Hanson.
Union tired to climb back into the game when Dale Chaput scored a power-play goal on a one-timer from Elise Nichols at 4:47 in the second period.
The BU power play struck again when Amanada Shaw put a blazing wrist shot over Hanson’s shoulder from the top of the right circle at 10:44 of the second.
The Terriers added an insurance goal at 17:41 of the third period when Gina Kearns scored on a quick wrap-around goal. BU had the power play set up in the Union zone when Shaw took a blast from the point that was tipped just wide by Hendry. Kearns collected the rebound off the glass and sent the puck past a sprawling Hanson.
The teams match up again tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m. in Walter Brown Arena.
