Last season as freshmen the twin sisters led UND (2-2-0) in scoring, and they continued that trend continued against QU (1-3-1). Cami scored a hat trick in Saturday’s game to bring her total to five goals on the year and added an assist, while her sister Cara assisted on Cami’s first goal and then added a goal of her own in the second period.

“They’re very important, as veterans that played a ton last year – they’re very key to this teams success,” said UND head coach Shantel Rivard of the twins.

UND wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Just 1:47 into the opening period, freshman Randi Motsko netted her first career goal to give the Fighting Sioux a 1-0 lead. The period ended with the Sioux up 3-1.

The second period was very lackluster for the first 15 minutes, before a sudden five-goal outburst in the last five. The scoring began with Quinnipiac’s Hayley McMeeking tallying her fourth goal of this season at 15:27. Just 43 seconds later fellow freshman Elyse Cole tied the game at three.

It was then UND’s turn for some more offense. Seconds after Cole’s goal, QU freshman Jennifer Maclean took a five-minute major for cross-checking. Cara Wooster, senior Liz Funk, and Cami Wooster all scored power-play goals in a span of 1:53 during the penalty as UND retook the lead 6-3 and never looked back.

Special teams played a key role in the Sioux victory, as they were four-for-seven on the power play and successfully killed off six of Quinnipiac’s seven power plays.

“The five minute major definitely helped us out so we could go on a little tear,” Rivard said.

Sioux Freshman Melissa Jaques scored two goals and added an assist, while senior Liz Fink also added a goal.

UND senior goalie Amber Hasbargen stopped 14 shots to gain her second win on the year, evening her record at 2-2 on this season.

Bobcat junior goalie Janelle Wolitski took the loss to drop her record to 1-1-1 this year. Wolitski combined with freshman Connie Craig and junior Stephanie Tougas for 29 saves in the game.

Quinnipiac coach Michael Barrett was unavailable for comment after the game.

Next weekend UND travel to Wisconsin, while QU travels to Yale and UConn for the Nutmeg Classic.
