RPI Leaps Out To 5-0-1 Division I Start

Rensellear finished a two-game sweep of the Robert Morris with a 3-1 win at the RMU Island Sports Center on Saturday night.

Emily Donowick scored twice for the undefeated Engineers (5-0-1) who are in their first season in Division I.

Just like Friday night’s meeting, the team’s skated through a scoreless first period. Tonight, however, it was RPI that struck first. Julie Welte, who finished with a goal and an assist, opened the scoring at 6:05 of the middle stanza as she scored from right in front of the net with assists by Sarah Daniel and Mel Guillemette for the power-play tally.

The Engineers would score twice more in the in the second. Donowick added another power-play goal at 14:47 as she took a pass down low from Welte and cycled to the right face-off circle before scoring on the shortside. Donowick then added a heartbreaker, scoring with two seconds left in the period on Daniel’s second assist of the game, giving her team a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

Robert Morris ended up outshooting RPI, 8-3, in the third period, but freshman Ali Proodian’s goal with 43 seconds left in regulation came too late for the Colonials (0-4-0, 0-0-0 CHA) to mount a comeback. Proodian received assists from freshmen Samantha Ullrich and Kristin Miles.

Freshman Brianne McLaughlin took the loss, allowing three goals while making 21 saves in 40 minutes of work. Rookie Quinn Caggiula made three saves in the third period in her first collegiate action.

Emily Ford earned her second win of the season for Rensselaer, turning away 14 shots while coming within 43 seconds from her first career shutout.

The Colonials will play their next eight games on the road and will face No. 7 Harvard next Saturday. Meanwhile, RPI will host McGill on Saturday as well.
